Knives Out is a star-studded murder mystery movie written and directed by Rian Johnson. It follows Benoit Blanc (Daniel Craig), a private detective hired to investigate the apparent suicide of wealthy crime novelist Harlan Thrombey (Christopher Plummer) the night after his 85th birthday party. Blanc and two law-enforcement officers spend the next morning interviewing the Thrombey family, who were all gathered to attend the birthday party.
I was looking forward to this movie when I heard about it because I think Johnson is a very talented director. I believe that Looper (2012) is one of the better Sci-Fi movies out there, and so I had pretty high expectations for Knives Out. Somehow, this movie managed to exceed my expectations! I was on the edge of my seat trying to guess what was going to happen next, and I was wrong at almost every turn. When I thought that I knew all the answers, the movie surprised me with yet another twist, and I absolutely loved it.
From a technical perspective, the movie is beautifully shot, and the production design, be it the costumes or the mansion in which most of the movie takes place, really gives this movie a sense of intrigue that adds to the overall mystery. Knives Out has an excellent soundtrack (composed by Nathan Johnson) that also plays an important role in setting up and maintaining the mystery throughout the movie. However, I think my favorite technical aspect is the editing. The quick transition between scenes (especially during the interrogations) was both confusing and exciting, and it gave the movie a nice fast pace that kept me engaged from start to end.
All the performances in the movie were great (as can be expected from a star-studded cast), with the standout being Daniel Craig. He really is the heart and soul of the movie. His character is charismatic and hilarious, and he really pulls off that southern accent. It was truly a joy to follow him as he attempted to crack the murder mystery. Without going into details for the rest of the cast, they were all exceptional. Everyone had a specific role to play, and they played it perfectly.
Knives Out is a must-watch for any murder mystery fans out there. It is full of twists and turns that will keep you guessing until the final shot. The movie feels like an homage to Agatha Christie, with her influence being felt in every shot of the movie.
Star Rating: (9 / 10)
